Blinn’s Flores advances to semifinals of NJCAAE Super Smash Bros playoffs

The Blinn College esports team advanced one player in Super Smash Bros play during NJCAA Esports Invitational Playoffs action Thursday.

Top-seeded Jaydon Flores earned a victory over his opponent from Glen Oaks Community College to advance to the semifinals. Flores' teammate, Brett Fahrenholz, fell in a pair of matches against Glen Oaks and Calhoun Community College, bringing about the end of his season.

Flores was triumphant with a 3-0 sweep and will now battle a representative from Heartland Community College at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 16.

"While we got off to a little shaky start with Jaydon barely etching out a win, he was able to shake off the nerves," Blinn assistant coach Kyle Murto said. "Moving on to the second match of the series, it was a lot more dominant then the first and he was able to pick up the convincing win."

Fahrenholz fell 3-0 and 3-1, ending a strong season and career for the Buccaneers.

"Brett's season has come to an end, and his time with this program has now ended with him moving on to a four-year university after this semester," Murto said. "Despite the ending, I could not be prouder of Brett and how far he has come as a player since he first joined this program more than a year ago. He has become a phenomenal player, capable of being one of the top Super Smash Bros players in the nation amongst two year colleges, and has been a great captain, pushing the rest of the team to improve every day."

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 43 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
