Blinn earns victories in Overwatch and Call of Duty matches

 

The Blinn College esports team earned a pair of victories Wednesday, with National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) wins in both Overwatch and Call of Duty.

The Buccaneer Overwatch team defeated the Rochester Institute of Technology 3-0 and improved to 3-0 overall in NACE East One division play.

"It was a phenomenal game and the team performed exceptionally well," said Blinn assistant coach Kyle Murto, who oversees the Overwatch team. "We're tied for first place, and I firmly believe that we can finish out the regular season undefeated."

Competing for the Bucs were sophomores Gabriel Lopez, William Bowman, and Jake Langridge, as well as freshmen Nicholas Behney and Matthew Hutchings.

"As a team, we've been synergizing really well, and I am looking forward to the rest of the season," Hutchings said.

Blinn's Call of Duty squad topped Texas A&M University-San Antonio 3-0. The Bucs are 2-0 in the NACE West-Central division..

Bucs assistant coach Ryan Lucich, Blinn's Call of Duty coach, praised sophomore team captain David Rodriguez for his leadership during the win.

"He was unstoppable," Lucich said. 

Rodriguez competed alongside sophomores Jake Marsh and Mathew Liu, and freshman Landon Campos.

Blinn Overwatch faces the University of Texas-Dallas at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, while the Buccaneers battle Keyano College in a Call of Duty tilt at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday., Feb. 15. Blinn's Valorant team will participate in the Collegiate Valorant Round of 32 beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
