Buccaneers upset No. 18 Northeast Texas, 3-2

BRENHAM, Texas — Freshman Derek Norsworthy scored two goals to help lead the Blinn College men's soccer team (4-2, 3-1) to a 3-2 upset over No. 18 Northeast Texas Community College 

"It was a really big game and we showed great character by coming back to win it," said Michael McBride, Blinn head coach. "We showed signs of a young team finding maturity."

Northworthy led the offense with two goals, while Farit Ha scored one. JT McCoy was strong on defense, recording seven saves for Blinn. 

Northeast Texas held a 2-1 lead at the half that the Buccaneers rallied back from. The Eagles were the first to score in the 13th minute, but Farit Ha evened the score for the Buccaneers in the 37th minute by scoring on a penalty kick. Northeast Texas took back a 2-1 lead in the 42nd minute of play.

In the second half, Norsworthy took over the offense, scoring in the 56th minute to level the score 2-2. In the 88th minute, Northworthy found the back of the net once again for the game-winning goal. 

Next, Blinn will host Paris Junior College in a conference match on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. The women's team will start the doubleheader at 2 p.m. 

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
