Adams breaks Buccaneers’ career-points record

There's no doubt in Jeff Jenkins' mind that Fatima Adams is the best player he's coached in his 12 years at Blinn College.

So it came as no surprise as Jenkins tallied the stats from Wednesday night's game that he noticed Adams set the program's career points record, breaking Sallie Routt's 1,136 career points set back in 1985-87. With at least two games remaining on the season, Adams has scored 1,138 points as a Buccaneer.

"The stuff Fatima does in games is so athletic," Jenkins said. "She has such great ball-control, she's so good around the rim, she can rebound, she can score anywhere around the court."

With the numbers and accolades Adams has achieved during her two years, it would be hard to argue Jenkins' case.

The sophomore from Bryan Rudder High School has helped lead the Buccaneers to two of the most dominant years in program history. In that time, the team is 55-9 overall, advanced to the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship for the second time in the program's 36-year history and, once there, won the program's first game on the national stage as the team advanced to the Elite Eight.

Adams' scoring record is another accolade for the sophomore who earlier passed Amaka Uzomah as the program's all-time leading rebounder.

"I came to Blinn and I was out of shape and not in the right mindset," Adams said. "Coach Jenkins and (assistant) coach (Alexis) Green helped me get in shape, get my mind right and help me grow to a Division I basketball player."

Adams signed with the University of Houston in the fall.

What makes the 5-foot-10 post so dangerous, Jenkins said, is she can score in so many ways: she can push the ball in transition, drive in the lane, score in the low post or drain a jumper from any spot on the court.

On the season, Adams is averaging 22.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, numbers that Jenkins considers unprecedented in the fast-paced style of offense the Bucs play. Both categories rank her among the top 10 best in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

"I'd bet she's the best player in the nation," Green said.

That's a case Jenkins can't argue.
