Buccaneers’ bench contributes big in win

With the Blinn women's basketball team in foul trouble Wednesday night, the Buccaneers' bench stepped in big.

The Bucs beat McLennan 78-65 at the Blinn P.E. Building behind an all-around performance from their bench.

"We showed a lot of progress," Blinn (5-2) coach Jeff Jenkins said. "We went on a good run in the second half with the players off our bench."

Fatima Adams, the team's leading scorer, fouled out in the second half, but sophomores Danielle Espinoza and Shanequa Gaston helped fill Adams' void. Gaston scored eight points and Espinoza contributed another seven, included a 3-pointer, as the Bucs put up 54 second-half points.

Despite fouling out, Adams led the scoring with 16 points. Tierra Tucker and Tayler Weiks each scored nine, all nine of Weiks coming from three-point land. Through six games, Weiks is shooting 44 percent from behind the arc.

Blinn held a narrow 24-15 lead at the half.

"It was a tale of two halves," Jenkins said. "I was happy to have a nine-point lead at the half. McLennan is a really good team, and they've beaten a lot of teams in our region this year."
