Weiks’ hot hand leads Buccaneers past Victoria

Tayler Weiks proved how deadly she can be behind the 3-point arc Monday night.

Weiks, a transfer from the University of Idaho, torched the Victoria College defense for five 3-pointers at the Blinn P.E. Building as the Blinn women's basketball team won 129-50.

"She's been shooting the ball really well," Blinn (4-2) coach Jeff Jenkins said. "She's such a good offensive player. She's going to help us when we face more zone defenses because break the zone and open things up for us."

Weiks scored a season-high 22 points in the Buccaneers' victory. She was one of eight players to reach double figures, and one of 10 players to score in the game.

Behind her was sophomore post Fatima Adams with 17 points, and Alexus Freeman, a freshman from Navasota High School, scored 16. Shakera Barnes, a freshman from Snook High School, scored 14.

It was a night that allowed Jenkins to rest Adams, the Bucs' leading scorer at this point in the season, and sophomore Shunta Nevitt, who scored 13 points. That allowed players such as Barnes, Katrina Hayden, Brianna Luton and Shanequa Gaston more playing time.

"They all got some valuable court time," Jenkins said.

Hayden scored 13 points and Luton and Gaston each contributed 11 points in Blinn's highest scoring game of the season.

The Bucs beat Victoria 109-51 in their season opener Nov. 1.
