Buccaneers halt Hill’s late rally for 72-54 victory

With 3:27 remaining in the game, Hill College was on a run and had cut a once dominant lead by the Blinn women's basketball team to 10 points.

Freshmen Alexus Freeman and Brianna Luton wouldn't let the Lady Rebels cut that lead any closer.

Following a Freeman bucket to stretch the lead to 12, Luton sunk a shot under the basket to build Blinn's lead to 14 and the Buccaneers beat undefeated Hill 72-54 at the Blinn P.E. Building Monday night.

"Hill is a good team –– they shoot the ball extremely well," Blinn (8-2) coach Jeff Jenkins said. "I thought both teams were a little tired –– when you give the players two or three days off for Thanksgiving and play as soon as you get back, you're not going to look as crisp as you were before."

The first half, the Bucs didn't look like much would slow them down as the led 39-20 at halftime –– at the 7:12 mark, they led 31-6 before Hill found its offense. Blinn was able to force the Lady Rebels into turnovers and benefitted from a good performance rebounding.

Though Blinn wasn't able to keep up that level of play in the second half. The team struggled with turnovers of its own and continuously fouled the Lady Rebels on defense. With 6:05 remaining in the game, six Bucs had at least three fouls.

Despite Hill's (7-1) attempts to pull it close late, Shunta Nevitt hit a bucket to fend off Hill's push, and Luton and Freeman's late buckets ended that rally for good.

Hill previously beat Blinn on its home court, 72-66, Nov. 4.

Luton scored nine points and Freeman contributed another eight. Sophomore Fatima Adams led the Bucs with 21 points, including 13 in the second half.

"I thought Brianna Luton came in and played really well, as did Shanequa Gaston," Jenkins said. "Alexus really came down with some big offensive rebounds for us at the end of the game."
