KILGORE, Texas – A dominant second half led to a blowout victory for the Blinn women's basketball team here Saturday.

The Buccaneers overcame a three-point halftime deficit with a 40-point second half as they cruised past the Lady Rangers 66-45.

Blinn found its groove on offense and the defense made the necessary stops for the team to recover from Kilgore's 29-26 halftime lead. Blinn outscored Kilgore 40-16 in the second half.

"The first half we fouled quite a bit and we weren't very fluid offensively," Blinn  (18-4, 8-2 Region XIV) coach Jeff Jenkins said.  "In the second half we did a good job of getting stops."

Jenkins went with a different approach defensively. Sophomore Shunta Nevitt, who typically plays as a post, was moved to a guard and gave the Bucs a lot more size on the outside. Nevitt, who's 6-foot, joined sophomores Amari Jones (5-11) and Fatima Adams (5-10) in disrupting the Lady Rangers offense.

"Shunta is a very good on-ball defender for us," Jenkins said. "She's one of the best guard defenders that we have."

The trio's combined effort limited Kilgore to a 19 percent shooting percentage in the second half.

That allowed Blinn to push the ball in transition offensively—just the way the Bucs like to run their offense.

Katrina Hayden led the Bucs with 16 points, including two 3-pointers, Adams scored 15 and Tierra Tucker scored 11.  Nevitt scored nine and Jones scored eight, along with pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.
