It took nearly 30 minutes for the Blinn women's basketball team to find its offense Saturday, but once the Buccaneers pieced it together, they ran away from the Angelina Lady Roadrunners.
The 14th-ranked Bucs—behind sophomores Fatima Adams and Tayler Weiks—beat Angelina 79-62 at the Blinn P.E. Building.
"I thought we struggled offensively in the first half, but we finally got that run we'd been waiting for in the second half," Blinn (21-5, 11-3) coach Jeff Jenkins said.
That run came near the 10-minute mark when Adams hit a bucket and the ensuing free throw to give Blinn a three-point lead. Less than a minute later, Weiks drained a 3-pointer to extend the lead to six.
"Tayler made some plays tonight," Jenkins said. "She's a good asset to have when you can hit that perimeter shot against teams that like to zone."
Weiks, who scored 13 points off the bench, hit three 3-pointers, including one at the 7:59 mark in the second half that she turned into a four-point play after she was fouled and hit the and-one free throw.
Adams scored 31 points, 20 of which came in the second half. Katrina Hayden dropped 13 and Shunta Nevitt scored 11.
Angelina never pulled the game closer than 10 points in the final eight minutes.
"It was a really good win for us, especially coming off a tough loss," Jenkins said. "I thought we responded really well."
That loss came Wednesday night on the road to 15th-ranked Tyler Junior College, 98-95. The two teams are tied for second in the Region XIV Conference standings going into the final four games of the regular season.
