Buccaneer bats scorch Whitecaps, 21-5

GALVESTON, Texas – A 15-run seventh inning boosted the Blinn College baseball team to a 21-5 victory over the Galveston Whitecaps Saturday.

The Buccaneers led just 6-4 going into the top of the seventh when they erupted for 11 hits, including five doubles and a home run. The Buccaneers also drew three walks and two hitters were hit by pitches.

The game ended via mercy rule after the bottom of the seventh.

"We had hit balls hard earlier in the game, but this time they fell in and it created a big inning," Blinn coach Harvey McIntyre said. "Guys did a really good job of just trying to get the next guy up."

After Brandon Montalvo drove in a run on a fielder's choice, third baseman Kevin Santana hit a three-run home run to left field. Robert Garza, Hayden Vesely, Josh Garza and Tyler Coker each hit RBI doubles, Cullen Gassaway hit an RBI single, Robert Garza was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Vesely drove in another run with a single and Scott Jones closed the rally a two-run double.

Vesely went 5-for-5 on the day with five RBIs and three runs scored, and Coker, Santana and Gassaway each went 3-for-3. Robert Garza, Santana and Coker each drove in three runs, Gassaway scored four times and Santana and Vesely each scored three times.

Freshman Robert Dickey picked up the win, throwing 5 2/3 innings. He allowed four earned runs on four hits and three walks and struck out five.

Tyler Day threw an inning in relief and Vesely recorded the game's final out. The Buccaneers improved to 30-23 on the season and 17-11 in the Region XIV Conference.

Blinn and Galveston meet again Saturday for a 1 p.m. double-header at Leroy Dreyer Field in Brenham.
