Vesely, freshman pitchers lead Bucs to double-header sweep

GALVESTON, Texas – An extra-inning home run and two strong outings from freshman pitchers led the Blinn College baseball team to a double-header sweep of Galveston College here Saturday.

Blinn defeated Galveston 7-4 and 2-1 to complete a three-game Region XIV Conference series. The Whitecaps won the series opener 9-3 Friday in Brenham.

"After Friday's game, we were wondering which direction we were going in and they righted the ship," Blinn (18-16, 8-7) coach Harvey McIntyre said. "It's big to finish the first half of conference with two wins."

The Buccaneers turned to a pair of freshman pitchers Saturday, handing the ball to Robert Dickey in Game 1 and Weston Wick in Game 2. Dickey threw seven innings in the opener, scattering six hits and a walk while striking out five. Of the four runs allowed, just one was earned.

Sophomore Hayden Vesely's three-run home run with one out in the eighth inning won the game. Scott Jones, Nolan Brown, Kevin Santana and Vesely each went 2-for-4 for the Bucs.

"It felt like someone took 5,000 pounds off our shoulders," McIntyre said.

Colin Fry drove in two runs and Santana and Robert Garza each added RBIs.

J.C. Neighbors threw a scoreless eighth inning for the save.

Wick dominated Game 2, allowing just three hits without walking a batter. Tyler Sullivan hit a solo home run for Galveston's lone run of the game.

"Weston just executed," McIntyre said. "Nothing fancy, but he really commanded the fastball in on their hitters. He was in control and he was phenomenal."

Santana drove in both Buccaneer runs with an RBI single in the third inning and an RBI double in the sixth. Santana and Brown each went 2-for-3.

The Buccaneers host Wharton County Junior College at 6 p.m. April 5 at Leroy Dreyer Field, then play the Pioneers in a 3 p.m. double-header at Wharton on April 6.
