Buccaneers rally for road win, 14-7

HOBBS, N.M. – The Blinn Buccaneers battled back from a four-run deficit Sunday to defeat New Mexico Junior College 14-7.

The Buccaneers, who had been outscored 31-10 in a pair of losses to New Mexico on Saturday, fought back from a 6-2 deficit with 12 runs in the final four innings.

Taylor Cobb, who took the loss on the mound in the series opener the day prior, led the Buccaneer offense with three RBIs and four runs scored on a 3-for-5 day.

Colin Kowal went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Michael Vielma was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Hayden Vesely went 2-for-6 and drove in two runs. Hayden Cammack, Josh Garza, Kevin Santana and Cullen Gassaway drove in one run apiece and Tyler Coker drew four walks.

"Our hitters were great the last two games," said Blinn (3-6) coach Harvey McIntyre. "We stepped up and punched the ball through with two outs today. Everybody in our lineup did a good job and kept scrapping.

"Cobb didn't have his best day on the bump yesterday, but he moved on and really showed up today. He was really productive and got some big knocks for us."

Both teams had to battle winds ranging from 20-30 mph, with gusts that reached up to 40 mph.

Freshman Wesley Wick threw the first 2 2/3 innings for the Buccaneers, allowing three earned runs on two hits and five walks.

Sophomore Karl Malecek went 6 1/3 innings in relief, allowing four earned runs on five hits. He struck out five without walking a batter.

"He didn't give up the big inning," McIntyre said. "He threw up some zeros, and it's funny how much better we got offensively when we had a chance to take the lead. Malecek gave us a fighting chance today."
