Buccaneers drop series opener vs. Galveston

BRENHAM, Texas – Galveston College's Tanner Hill launched a three-run home run and the Whitecaps piled up 12 hits in a 9-3 Region XIV Conference victory over the Blinn Buccaneers Friday at Leroy Dreyer Field.

Blinn's Hayden Vesely went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and outfielders Nolan Brown and Colin Kowal each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, but the Buccaneers fell behind 7-0 in the first four innings and were unable to recover.

Hill's three-run blast in the top of the fourth gave Galveston a 7-0 lead off Blinn starting pitcher Karl Malecek. Malecek threw five innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out three.

Kyle Mueller, a Bellville High School product, threw the final four innings in relief, allowing one earned run on four hits and a walk. He struck out two.

Galveston tallied 12 hits on the day.

The Buccaneers got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Kowal brought Vesely home with an RBI single. Vesely hit an RBI ground-out in the seventh and Brown smacked an RBI double in the eighth inning.

The Buccaneers fell to 16-16 on the season and are now 6-7 in Region XIV play.

The three-game series concludes Saturday with a 1 p.m. double-header at Galveston.
