Buccaneers take two from first-place Dolphins

BRENHAM, Texas – The Blinn Buccaneers piled up 28 hits Saturday in a double-header sweep of the first-place Alvin Dolphins at Leroy Dreyer Field.

Blinn defeated Alvin 8-2 and 14-1 to improve to 24-18 on the season and 12-9 in the Region XIV Conference. The Buccaneers have now won four of their last five.

A four-run sixth inning helped the Buccaneers claim the win in the opening game as Brandon Montalvo went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Tyler Coker was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs and Scott Jones went 2-for-4.

Kevin Santana and Montalvo got the Buccaneers on the scoreboard in the first inning with RBI doubles, and Robert Garza drove in a run with a double of his own in the fourth inning. Hayden Vesely added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

In the sixth, Montalvo hit a two-run single and Coker followed with a two-run double that broke the game open.

Karl Malecek threw all seven innings for the Buccaneers, allowing one earned run on six hits and a walk. He struck out five.

After tallying 10 hits in the opening game, the Buccaneers exploded for 18 hits in Game 2 as seven different players contributed at least two hits.

Robert Garza went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in three runs, and Santana went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs.

Scott Jones went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs and Colin Kowal was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Coker went 2-for-2 with a home run and three runs scored, Holden Cammack went 2-for-4 and scored once and Josh Garza went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

While the Buccaneers piled up runs, freshman Weston Wick held the Dolphins to just three hits. Wick allowed one unearned run and struck out two.

Blinn travels to Austin Tuesday for a 2 p.m. non-conference double-header against Concordia University's junior varsity, then returns home Friday for a 6 p.m. contest against Laredo.
