Alvin takes series opener over Blinn, 6-2

HOUSTON, Texas – The Blinn Buccaneers piled up 10 hits but just a couple runs in a 6-2 Region XIV Conference loss to the Alvin Dolphins at Baseball USA here Friday afternoon.

Blinn out-hit Alvin 10-9, but scored its only two runs of the day in the second inning when third baseman Kevin Santana launched a leadoff home run over the left-field wall and second baseman Hayden Vesely singled and scored on a wild pitch.

Freshman Robert Dickey took the loss for the Buccaneers, allowing three runs – two earned – over 4 2/3 innings. He allowed three hits and walked two while striking out four.

Kyle Mueller allowed three runs in an inning of relief and J.C. Neighbors threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Alvin rallied for two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth for the win.

Blinn fell to 22-18 on the season and 10-9 in Region XIV. Alvin leads the conference with a 15-4 record.

The game was moved from Alvin's home ballpark to Baseball USA after rain earlier in the week rendered Alvin's field unplayable.

Blinn and Alvin will continue their three-game series at 1 p.m. Saturday at Leroy Dreyer Field in Brenham. Blinn will celebrate its second Turn Back the Clock Day, in which the Buccaneers wear replica jerseys modeled after those worn by the team during the 1920s and '30s. Proceeds from the event, which features old-time music and 50-cent hot dogs, will benefit Adam's Angels Ministry.

Adam's Angels Ministry is a non-profit organization founded by Donna and Tim Culliver of Brenham as a way to reach out to families that have been affected by childhood cancer. The Cullivers lost their 4-year-old son, Adam Christian Culliver, to acute myelogenous leukemia.

Blinn began hosting Turn Back the Clock Days in 2009 as a fundraiser for local charities. In previous years, the event has raised money for Boys & Girls Club of Washington County, the Brazos Valley Hospice and Washington County Little League.

All monetary donations and fund-raising proceeds raised from this year's event will allow Adam's Angels to assist families with living expenses, fuel costs, medical parking and meal vouchers. Individuals or companies wishing to donate directly to Adam's Angels Ministry can send checks to: P.O. Box 2573, Brenham, TX 77834-2573, or visitwww.adamsangelsministry.org.
