Alvin snaps Blinn’s five-game win streak

ALVIN, Texas – The Alvin Dolphins snapped the Blinn Buccaneers' five-game win streak with 14-10 and 5-4 victories in a Region XIV Conference double-header here Saturday.

Alvin jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the opener, and even though the Buccaneers rallied for seven runs in the fifth, it wasn't enough to overcome the Dolphin offense.

Starting pitcher Weston Wick took the loss for the Buccaneers, allowing six earned runs in 1 2/3 innings. The Dolphins didn't treat reliever Michael Vielma much better as he allowed six runs – five earned – in 2 1/3 innings. Cole Doherty allowed two earned runs in an inning of work, and Tyler Day was the only Buccaneer hurler to escape unscathed with a scoreless seventh inning.

Scott Jones, Tyler Coker, Taylor Cobb and Kevin Santana each went 2-for-4, and Hayden Vesely was 2-for-3. Cobb drove in three runs on the day and Nolan Brown added two RBIs. Santana, Brandon Montalvo and Robert Garza also added RBIs.

The Buccaneers controlled most of the second game, but the Dolphins struck quickly in the seventh as their first three hitters of the inning all homered. Up to that point, starting pitcher Robert Dickey had allowed just two Dolphin hits.

Dickey allowed five runs on the day – four earned – on five hits and two walks. He struck out three. J.C. Neighbors recorded the final four outs without allowing a run.

Coker and Colin Kowal each went 2-for-4, while Jones, Vesely and Kowal each drove runs in.

Blinn won the series opener 8-0 in Brenham on Friday.

The losses dropped the Buccaneers to 11-11 on the season and 3-3 in conference play. The Bucs travel to Laredo Friday for a 6 p.m. contest, then complete the series with a 1 p.m. double-header, also in Laredo.
