San Jacinto holds off Blinn rally, 8-6

BRENHAM, Texas – The Blinn Buccaneers couldn't complete a late comeback bid at Leroy Dreyer Field Friday night as the San Jacinto Gators snapped the Bucs' five-game Region XIV Conference win streak.

San Jacinto jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Nolan Brown hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. San Jacinto extended its lead to 6-1 until the Buccaneers struck back with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Brandon Montalvo drew a leadoff walk and Kevin Santana followed with a single before Cullen Gassaway advanced both runners with a fly ball to center field. Nolan Brown followed with a two-run single to right field, and Colin Kowal added an RBI single. With two outs, Josh Garza hit an RBI single to score Kowal and pull the Buccaneers within a run, 6-5.

But San Jacinto would score two runs on three hits in the top of the ninth to extend its lead.

The Buccaneers took advantage of two San Jacinto errors in the bottom of the inning. Gassaway drove in a run on a fielder's choice, but the Gators retired the next two batters to end the game.

Montalvo, Santana, Brown and Kowal contributed two hits apiece as the Bucs tallied 10 hits on the night.

Robert Dickey threw 111 pitches over seven innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and five walks. He struck out 11.

J.C. Neighbors threw the final two innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks.

Prior to the game, Blinn recognized four sponsors that helped the team erect a brand-new scoreboard at Leroy Dreyer Field. Kenneth Mutscher from Bluebonnet Electric, Tee Dippel from Brenham National Bank, Jim Kolkhorst from Rattlers Stores and Don Wilhelm from Blinn's Ex-Students Association each threw out a ceremonial first pitch and were presented a plaque commemorating their organization's contributions to Buccaneer baseball.

Blinn and San Jacinto continue their three-game series Saturday with a 2 p.m. double-header at San Jacinto.
