Buccaneers closing in on program wins record

BRENHAM, Texas – Taking it one day at a time, the Blinn Buccaneers are working their way into the program record books.

The 10th-ranked Buccaneer women defeated Paris Junior College 71-48 at the Blinn P.E. Building here Saturday to improve to 24-1 on the season and match two other teams for the second-most victories in program history.

The high mark of 26 wins was set in 2008. The Buccaneers need wins in three of their final five games to break that record.

Blinn's 1989 and 2006 teams each finished with 24 victories. The 1989 squad is the only team in program history to reach the NJCAA National Championships. This year's roster is looking to change that.

"It's cliché, but it's one day at a time," said Blinn coach Jeff Jenkins, whose team also improved to 9-1 in the Region XIV Conference. "We don't talk about goals. We just want to be playing our best basketball in March."

Sophomore forward Audrisa Harrison led the Buccaneers with 14 points.

"She's consistent," Jenkins said. "We've got a lot of good players and you never know who's going to show up on any given night, but Audrisa shows up every night. On her bad nights, she gives us 8-10 points and 8-10 rebounds."

Shanequa Gaston scored 12 points while Fatima Adams scored nine and Moe Bedford and Tierra Tucker each scored eight.

Voche Martin led Paris (7-16, 2-9 in Region XIV) with 14 points.

"I was impressed with our defensive effort," Jenkins said. "You never know what to expect after a bye. It's been a week between games, but I thought we played well."

The Buccaneers are now off until Feb. 16, when they play Angelina College at 4 p.m. in Lufkin.
