Bucs top McLennan in 91-84 shootout

BRENHAM, Texas – The 25th-ranked Blinn Buccaneers may hold a perfect record through their first six games of the season, but head coach Jeff Jenkins is quick to point out that the team itself isn't perfect just yet.

Fortunately, they have enough offensive firepower to overcome a mistake here and there.

Blinn defeated McLennan Community College 91-84 at the Blinn P.E. Building Tuesday night to improve to 6-0 on the season. Sophomore guard Aarika Reyna made four three-pointers to finish with a season-high 16 points and freshman guard Danielle Espinoza hit a pair of threes to finish with a season-high 15 points. Freshman guard Moe Bedford also scored 15.

"We pushed the ball pretty well," Jenkins said. "Both teams ran the floor well and made shots."

Freshman forward Amari Jones hit a pair of 3-pointers to finish with 11 points, all in the second half, and freshman forward Fatima Adams scored nine. Freshman guard Tierra Tucker scored eight and sophomore forward Audrisa Harrison added seven.

"The ceiling is just so high for this team," Jenkins said. "We still make a lot of mistakes, but if they keep improving we have a chance to be pretty good in February. We're making a lot of mistakes, but if you score 91 you can makes some mistakes and still win."

Blinn is now off until Nov. 27 when it plays at Southwest Christian College at 5:30 p.m. Should the Buccaneers win that game, Jenkins would tie Wayne Williams for the program record in victories with 200. Jenkins, who worked for Williams for two years at Midwestern State University, now holds a 199-123 record in 11 seasons with the Bucs.
