Three Blinn volleyball players earn conference player of the week honors

Three Blinn volleyball players claimed either Region XIV South Conference player of the week honors or player of the week at their respective positions.

Tawnee Luafalemana earned the overall player of the week out of conference while Jordyn Keamo was named setter of the week and Alyssa LaMont was named the libero of the week for Oct. 23-30. The game that the conference looked at was Oct. 21 against San Jacinto College where Blinn swept the match 3-0.

For Luafalemana, the San Jacinto match was her first since Oct. 11 and she came out hitting hard by earning 13 kills and a block while hitting at a .600 percentage.

"She (Luafalemana) really just started hitting the ball again and the fact that she can come out like that says a lot about her ability," said head volleyball coach Erin Mellinger. "I was a little hesitant to play her so soon but she assured me that she was ready to go."

As the setter, Keamo has the responsibility to set up her teammates with the perfect pass that will put them in a position for a kill. Keamo did an exceptional job of that against San Jacinto and earned 39 assists, three kills and five blocks.

"I think the main part for her (Keamo) is really her serving," Mellinger said. "She only had one ace but she created major disturbances that helped the team rattle off a string of points."

Getting the dig is a big part of the job for the libero and LaMont was able to accumulate 13 digs in only three sets against San Jacinto.

"That was a pretty good game for her (LaMont)," Mellinger said. "Alyssa always keeps us in the system whether on offense or defense and she puts the ball where it needs to be."

Blinn volleyball is preparing for the Region IV volleyball championship which is hosted by Lee College in Baytown. Blinn will open up the tournament Nov. 7 against Navarro at 3 p.m.
