Buccaneers look ‘Sharp’ in sweep of Victoria

Sophomore Rachel Sharp posted a team-high 11 kills and freshmen Abolanle Onipede and Haley Howard each added nine as the second-ranked Blinn College volleyball team swept Victoria College 25-5, 25-10, 25-17 Tuesday night.

The Buccaneers posted a hitting percentage of at least .406 in all three sets, including a .571 in the opener. Sharp, who also added six digs on the night, hit a team-high .714 with just one error on 14 attempts.

Lauren Loehr finished with a team-high 21 assists while Jordyn Keamo, fresh off being named the Region XIV Conference South Zone setter of the week last week, added seven.

Onipede paced the defense with four blocks while Howard finished with two, and Rebecca Proske had a team-high 12 digs.

With the win, the Buccaneers improved to 28-1 on the season and captured their 13th consecutive victory.

"It was a good team effort and a great opportunity for the majority of our freshmen to be on the floor," coach Erin Mellinger said.

The contest was the Buccaneers' Here I Am Orphan Ministries game, with gate proceeds going to benefit the Christian non-profit ministry, which cares for orphans through prayer, missions, education, advocacy and adoption awareness. Blinn has partnered with Here I Am Orphan Ministries for the second year of its Adopt-a-Charity program, which donated more than $1,200 to Adam's Angels Ministry last year. As part of the Adopt-A-Charity program, each of Blinn's six sports dedicate proceeds toward its partner nonprofit.

The Buccaneers are off until Tuesday, Oct. 21, when they play at Wharton County Junior College at 6 p.m.
