Buccaneers split final day of home invitational

The top-ranked Blinn College volleyball team defeated Hillsborough Community College to extend its season-opening win streak to 16 games before fourth-ranked Tyler Junior College snapped the Buccaneers' run of dominance Saturday at the Blinn Invitational.

Blinn beat Hillsborough 25-15, 25-17, 25-13 but fell to Tyler 25-20, 25-20, 25-23.

Trinity Alualu and Tawnee Luafalemana shared the Buccaneers' team lead with nine kills against Hillsborough, while Abolanle Onipede finished with seven. Luafalemana hit .642 for the match.

Freshman setter Jordyn Keamo dished out 24 and Justus Tuiolosega added nine, and Alualu led the defense with 16 digs and four blocks. Luafalemana and Rebecca Reeve also had four blocks in the match.

Alualu and Reeve had a team-high eight kills against Tyler while Luafalemana finished with seven. Tuiolosega dished out 18 assists, Alyssa LaMont led the defense with seven digs and Luafalemana finished with five blocks.

The Buccaneers travel to Coastal Bend College Tuesday for a 6 p.m. match, then return to Brenham Friday for a 6 p.m. match vs. Temple College. Blinn is ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA Division I poll.
