Blinn women’s soccer falls to Northeast Texas in double OT, 3-2

MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas — On Friday afternoon, a Northeast Texas Community College goal in the 108th minute proved the winner as the Eagles defeated the Blinn College women's soccer team (5-8, 3-7), 3-2 (2OT).

"This was the best game our team has played this season and it was really impressive," said Michael McBride, Blinn head coach. "We were one minute and 20 seconds away from a huge upset and unfortunately came away empty handed, but they played great."

On offense, Kaley Kaspar led Blinn with five shots, Carla Garcia led Blinn with two shots on goal and one goal, and Karson Funderburk scored one goal, while Janay Wilson and Alyssa Correa recorded one assist each.

Goalkeeper Hope Hillhouse played the entire game, recording nine saves.

Northeast Texas took the lead first in the 31st minute and held it for the remainder of the first half.

Blinn landed on the board when Garcia scored in the 52nd minute for the Buccaneers to tie the game 1-1, while Wilson recorded the assist. Blinn extended its lead to 2-1 in the 85th minute when Funderburk scored on a pass from Correa.

The Eagles managed to rally back with a goal in the 89th minute to even the score 2-2 and send the game into overtime. Their final goal came in double overtime at the 108th mark for the win.

Next, the Blinn women's soccer team will travel to face Paris Junior College on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. The men's soccer game will follow at 4 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
