Blinn women’s soccer downs Mountain View in home opener, 3-1

BRENHAM, Texas — The Blinn College women's soccer team (2-3, 1-2) claimed a 3-1 win over Mountain View College in its home opener on Tuesday night.

"It is wonderful to be home with a really great crowd," said Michael McBride, Blinn head coach. "This team is making a lot of progress and today we created the most chances in a game than we have all season, so it is really pleasing."

Karson Funderburk, Bethany Sorenson and Kaley Kasper all pitched in with goals, while Funderburk and Carla Garcia each recorded an assist. Goalkeeper Hope Hillhouse ensured the shutout.

"It feels so good to play in front of the home crowd and we really wanted this win on our own turf," Funderburk said. "The chemistry is starting to kick in and we are all understanding where to move the ball to finish on the goal."

The Buccaneers and the Lions both played a solid game on defense in the first half for the game to remain scoreless.

In the second half, Blinn's offense came alive to score three goals.

Funderburk scored Blinn's first goal in the 50th minute for the Buccaneers to lead first. However, Mountain view landed on the board in the 62nd minute to tie the game 1-1.

The Buccaneers took back a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute when Funderburk assisted Bethany Sorenson in scoring a goal. In the 64th minute, Carla Garcia passed the ball off to Kaley Kasper to score and Blinn to lead 3-1.

Next, the Buccaneers will return to conference play against Northeast Texas Community College on Friday, Sept. 13, at 5 p.m. at Rankin Field. The men's team will take the field at 7 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
