Buccaneers victorious in regular-season finale

BEEVILLE, Texas – The Blinn men's basketball team closed out its regular season with a 63-58 win over Coastal bend here Wednesday night.

Now the Buccaneers are headed to the Region XIV Conference Tournament March 4-8 with a bit of momentum.

Behind 20 points from freshman point guard Jalan McCloud, the Buccaneers controlled the entire contest, even without of their top players on the floor.

"I thought our guys played really good basketball tonight," Blinn (17-13, 7-12) coach Scott Schumacher said. "We guarded really well and we didn't give up easy shots. We took care of the ball and really executed our offense."

With the win, the Bucs clinched either the eighth or ninth seed in the conference tournament.

They did so without their leading scorer Macari Brooks, who's battling an Achilles injury, and freshman point guard Lionheart Leslie, who's battling an ankle injury. Sophomore Eddie Alcantara saw limited minutes as he recovers from ankle issues.

With the three out, McCloud and Eric Ross, who scored 10 points, helped lead the offense.

"Our guys did a great job and stepped up tonight," Schumacher said.
