Buccaneers extend winning streak to seven

Victoria College nearly pulled off an upset in the Blinn men's basketball team's season opener Nov. 1.

The Buccaneers never gave the Pirates that chance Monday night in the Blinn P.E. Building as they won handily, 106-62. The win extends Blinn's winning streak to seven games.

"We were able to go on some runs, and I thought our bench played really well," Blinn (7-0) coach Scott Schumacher said.

Leading the bench was the Harris twins, Broderick and Roderick, each of whom scored eight points. But sophomore Kendall Deveaux, one of three returning players from last year's team, highlighted the night. Deveaux, a 6-foot-8 post, scored 15 points and helped Blinn control the offensive boards.

"Kendall played his best game since he's been at Blinn College," Schumacher said.

Assisting in the post was another big man for the Bucs, Cornell Barnett, who stands 6-foot-7. Barnett recorded a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

"We played really well with our pressure-man defense, and with Deveaux and Barnett, we were really able to control the offensive glass," Schumacher said.

Blinn capitalized on those second-chance opportunities as five players recorded double figures, led by sophomore Macari Brooks' 18 points.

Lionheart Leslie scored 11 points and Jourdan Stickler added 10.

Wednesday's game at the P.E. Building against McLennan Community College will end the Bucs' stretch of five games in nine days.

"We'll take a short break and then gear up for conference play," Schumacher said.
