Buccaneers fall short in closing minutes

For 36 minutes Saturday night, the Blinn men's basketball team controlled the game. Unfortunately for the Buccaneers, Lamar State – Port Arthur controlled the final four.

Lamar State upset the Buccaneers 71-68 at the Blinn P.E. Building.

"I thought our guys played well, we just came up short," Blinn (13-8, 4-7  Region XIV) coach Scott Schumacher said.

Sophomore Macari Brooks drained a bucket to give the Bucs a 68-67 advantage with less than four minutes to play, but the Seahawks sparked a 4-0 run to end the game. The Bucs had a chance to regain the lead after Lamar State took the 69-68 go-ahead, but missed a pair of free throws.

"We battled the whole way," Schumacher said.

After holding a 43-37 halftime lead, the Bucs went through a lull offensively in the second half that allowed the Seahawks to cut into the lead.

"We tried to drive inside, but their 7-foot post would block or alter our shots," Schumacher said.

Brooks scored 27 points and Eddie Alcantara scored 14.
