Brooks sparks Buccaneers to victory

With the game in a near deadlock, the Blinn men's basketball team turned to Macari Brooks to help pull out a victory over the Panola Ponies.

Brooks, the Bucs' leading scorer who's averaging more than 21 points per game, cut a seven-point Ponies lead into a 84-75 Blinn victory Saturday at the Blinn P.E. Building.

"Macari did a great job offensively to get some baskets that put us back in the game," Blinn (12-4, 3-3 Region XIV) coach Scott Schumacher said.

Brooks scored 22 points, 18 of which came in the second half.

Blinn held a 37-33 halftime lead, but Panola went on a run in the second half to build a seven-point lead with eight minutes to play.

That's when the Bucs turned to Brooks.

Brooks and the Bucs got help from freshman forward Roderick Harris, who turned in another strong performance by dropping 15 points.

Harris, a former high school all-state MVP at Jones High School in Houston, played aggressive in the paint and helped Blinn control the boards. With Blinn chipping away at Panola's lead, Harris was fouled on a drive, knocked down the shot and made the ensuing free throw to complete the three-point play.

"We found more of a flow in the second half and were able to get to the rim," Schumacher said.
