Second-half surge lifts TVCC past Blinn men

BRENHAM, Texas – Freshman forward Rashaun Stimage scored 18 points and freshman point guard Donald Moore added 17, but the Blinn Buccaneers were unable to pick up their first conference victory against Trinity Valley Community College Wednesday, 82-73.

Cardinals guard Karon Phillips scored a game-high 20 points and Jhaustin Thomas added 19 to improve the Cardinals to 13-4 on the season and 4-2 in the Region XIV Conference.

Blinn fell to 8-9 on the season and 0-6 in league play.

The teams entered the second half tied 30-30, but midway through the second half Trinity Valley went on a 7-0 run, and Phillips hit a pair of 3-pointers that proved fatal to the Buccaneers' upset bid.

T.J. Berry finished with 14 points for the Bucs, who shot 19-of-31 from the free throw line. Trinity Valley was 20-of-27 from the charity stripe.

"Rashaun played really well tonight," Blinn coach Scott Schumacher said. "He scored for us, he did a good job rebounding and he really did a good job defensively. He was really focused tonight."

The Buccaneers travel to Carthage, Texas on Saturday to play Panola College at 6 p.m. Their next home game will be Wednesday, when they host Angelina College at 7:30 p.m. in the Blinn P.E. Building.
