Young Bucs come up just short in season opener

WACO, Texas – Men's basketball coach Scott Schumacher may not have gotten the win he was looking for in his Blinn College debut here Friday night, but he couldn't have asked for more hustle from his young squad in the Buccaneers' season opener.

Hill College defeated Blinn 74-72 in overtime in the first day of the McLennan College Classic. Of the nine Buccaneers to step on the court, eight were freshmen.

"Even though we did not come out on top and we had way too many mistakes, I'm very pleased with how the guys competed on the road in their first collegiate game," Schumacher said. "They showed some character and did OK. It's a process, and we just have to keep building."

Freshman forward Rashaun Stimage scored a game-high 25 points while Darrell Combs and Donald Moore each scored 13.

Stimage's 25 points included four dunks.

"He played really well," Schumacher said. "He was also very active defensively."

Blinn committed 22 turnovers compared to 10 for Hill, but the Buccaneers out-shot the Rebels 40 percent to 29 percent. With seven seconds remaining in regulation, Moore drove the length of the floor to attempt a potential game-winning layup, but the shot was blocked as the buzzer sounded.

The Buccaneers got an opportunity to shoot a pair of free throws with 3.1 seconds remaining in overtime, but missed the first shot. On the second attempt, the Bucs purposely missed in an attempt to get a bucket off the rebound, but were unable to convert.

The game marked Blinn's first contest under Schumacher, who came to Blinn with a career record of 426-249, including the last four seasons at North Dakota State College of Science. He replaces Tra Arnold, who led the Bucs to a program-record 27 victories last season.

The Bucs will remain in Waco Saturday for an 8 p.m. game against McLennan College. Blinn's home opener will be Nov. 8, when the Bucs host Lone Star College – Cy-Fair at 7:30 p.m. at the Blinn P.E. Building.
