McLennan fights off Buccaneers late, 72-65

WACO, Texas – The Blinn Buccaneers have come close in their first two games of the season. Now they're looking to finish the job.

McLennan defeated Blinn 72-65 here Saturday night in the final game of the McLennan College Classic. The Buccaneers were defeated by Hill 74-72 in their season opener Friday.

"Both games we played extremely hard and competed, we just have too many possessions in which we don't get a good shot," said Blinn (0-2) coach Scott Schumacher. "I think we're starting to realize that at this level you have to do the little things to help you win games."

Freshman guard Darrell Combs led the Buccaneers with 19 points, and Rashaun Stimage scored eight points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked five shots despite missing time with an ankle injury.

Blinn shot 38 percent from the field, but ran into a McLennan squad that was on fire from the perimeter and made 10 of 18 shots from 3-point range. Despite McLennan's 3-point shooting, the Buccaneers were within two points with four and a half minutes remaining.

"The last two games we haven't done a good job in the final three minutes of taking care of the basketball and making good shots," Schumacher said. "It's all part of the growing up stage."

The Buccaneers play at Lone Star College-North Harris at 7:30 p.m. Monday, then play their home opener at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Lone Star – Cy-Fair.
