Blinn women’s soccer claims first win of the season over Jacksonville, 5-0

JACKSONVILLE, Texas — Blinn College women's soccer (1-1, 1-1) found success on the field against the Jacksonville College Jaguars and claimed its first win of the season by the score of 5-0 in a conference game on Thursday night.

"Getting the first win of the season was exciting and the team definitely earned it," said Jorden Smith, Blinn head coach. "We were finally able to settle into our style of play, find our rhythm and be effective on the field."

The Buccaneers took 15 shots with seven landing inside the goal. Hailey Burke and Natasha Thiele led the offense after each scoring one goal and recording one assist, while Yadira Grimaldo Gonzalez recorded two assists. Kaysi Gordon led the defense with three saves as Blinn shutout Jacksonville.

Blinn put pressure on Jacksonville early as Burke scored in the fifth minute and Ashleigh Rivas scored in the seventh minute following an assist by Burke.

The Buccaneers held a 2-0 lead until the 43rd minute when Janay Wilson scored off of assists by Alyssa Correa and Thiele. With one minute remaining in the first half, Kayla Bonilla scored to put Blinn ahead 4-0.

Thiele scored the final goal for Blinn in the 56th minute for the Buccaneers to take a 5-0 lead that they would hold for the remainder of the game. Gonzales recorded the final two assists for Blinn.

Blinn College women's soccer will continue conference play against No. 1 Tyler Junior College on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 5:00 p.m. in Tyler, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
