Blinn College women’s soccer trumps Jacksonville, 5-0

BRENHAM, Texas — Blinn College women's soccer players Yasmine Cuadra and Ashleigh Rivas teamed up to lead the offense to a 5-0 victory over Jacksonville College on Thursday afternoon at Cub Stadium.

The win improves Blinn's overall record to 4-11-1 and conference record to 3-7-1.

"We saw a lot of great things on both sides of the ball today, so that was exciting for us," said Jorden Smith, Blinn head coach. "It is awesome for our team to go out on a good note here at home. The home crowd came out and was amazing, so this was a nice boost heading into the final game of the season."

Rivas, Cuadra, Sara Guiberteau, Katherine Rabold and Janay Wilson each scored a goal for the Buccaneers. Rivas, Cuadra, Yadira Grimaldo and Kayla Bonilla all recorded assists in the game.

Cuadra and Rivas found each other in two scoring drives to help lead Blinn to the victory. First Cuadra assisted Rivas for Blinn's first goal of the game in the 31st minute. Then the roles reversed as Rivas assisted Cuadra in scoring Blinn's fourth goal in the game in the 49th minute.

"I feel like we were able to come together as a team and communicate more effectively which uplifted everyone's level of competition," Cuadra said. "It was really important for us to get the win. We had a rough start this season, but we came out here and finished strong in our final home game."

Blinn held a 2-0 lead at the half after Bonilla sent a corner kick to Guiberteau, who used a header to score in the 44th minute.

Grimaldo kept the offense rolling in the second half after sending a pass to Rabold for Blinn to score in the 48th minute and lead 3-0. Wilson used a penalty kick to score Blinn's final goal in the 87th minute.

"Our strength today was being able to come together and score in a variety of ways," Rivas said. "It was a great win."

Blinn women's soccer will conclude the season on the road against Angelina College on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 5 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
