Offense shines in No. 18 Blinn College softball’s sweep over Lamar State-Port Arthur, 9-1 and 11-4

BRENHAM, Texas  No. 18 Blinn College softball used an explosive offense to sweep Lamar State College-Port Arthur in Friday's doubleheader on Friday at Hohlt Park.

The Buccaneers totaled 15 hits to defeat the Seahawks, 9-1, in six innings to open the doubleheader. In the second game, Blinn tallied 14 hits for an 11-4 win to claim the sweep.

With the pair of wins, the Buccaneers improve their overall record to 39-12 and Region XIV record to 20-0, while extending their winning streak to 20 games.

"Our sophomores are really motivated to help the team get to Utah for nationals this year," said Rick Church, Blinn head coach. "I am proud of them for taking the leadership role and getting us to this point where we are playing well. This winning streak is the icing on the cake, but hopefully the preparation that they have established is going to get them to the payoff that they really want which is to go to Utah."

Blinn 9 – Lamar State-Port Arthur 1

Bailey Zibelin, Amber Langston and Kimber Cortemelia each recorded three hits to help the Buccaneers run-rule Lamar State-Port Arthur, 9-1, in six innings.

Zibelin led Blinn with three RBIs, while Langston and Mackenzi Crews each knocked in two runs. Langston joined Cortemelia in leading the Buccaneers with two runs apiece.

"Today we were really pumped to be playing at home and knowing that we are already the No. 1 seed going into the Region XIV tournament gives us a lot of confidence in these final conference games," Langston said. "We trust our swing, trust our teammates and just believe in each other."

On defense, Meghan Morris picked up the win in the circle after throwing a complete six-inning game and only allowing one run on five hits.

"There is no way that we could be undefeated in conference without having both a really good offense and defense, and it feels really good," Morris said. "This year our team has become a family and our goals are to win the Region XIV tournament and go to Utah, while enjoying the time we have left together."

The first three innings between the Buccaneers and Seahawks were close as Blinn scored just two runs in the opening inning. Anna Pisaro scored on Cortemelia's single, while Langston scored on Zibelin's single for the 2-0 lead.

Blinn took off with the game in the fourth inning by scoring five runs. Crews sparked the offense with a leadoff double and later scored on a double off the bat of Mayela Fernandez. Langston knocked in two runs with a double that plated Fernandez and Sarah Cedillo, while Zibelin drove in the next two with a double for Langston and Cortemelia to score.

The Seahawks scored one run in the sixth inning, but the Buccaneers answered with two in the bottom half. Maria Garcia scored the first run on Zibelin's double, while Kristin Kaiser scored on a single by Crews for the run-rule win.

Blinn 11 – Lamar State-Port Arthur 4

A six-run first inning paved the way for Blinn to defeat the Seahawks, 11-4, in the second game of the doubleheader for the sweep.

Maria Garcia led the offense with three RBIs and two runs, while Zibelin and Courtney Ogle each drove in two runs. Cedillo, Pisaro, Cortemelia and Garcia all scored two runs in the win.

Alysa Torres sealed the win the circle after throwing five innings and only allowing four runs on five hits. Ashley Richardson threw the final two innings and only allowed one hit, while striking out one.

Blinn opened the game with an early 6-0 lead in the first inning after stringing together eight hits. Pisaro started things off with a triple for Cedillo to score, while Cortemelia followed with a triple to plate Posaro and Zibelin singled for Cortemelia to score. Ogle kept things rolling with a two-run single for Zibelin and Crews to come home and Cedillo drove in  the final run with a single for Ogle to score.

In the fourth inning, Garcia hit a three-run homer for the Buccaneers to extend their lead to 9-0.

The Seahawks landed on the board with two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to gain on Blinn 9-4, but the Buccaneers answered back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Julissa Llanos singled for Pisaro to score the first run of the inning, while Zibelin tripled for Garcia to score the final run of the game.

Next, Blinn will host Galveston College on Wednesday, May 1, in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at Hohlt Park. The Buccaneers are home for the final six games of the regular season before heading to the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament as the No. 1 seed in the South Division.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
