Buccaneers sweep Baton Rouge, 12-0 and 11-4

BATON ROUGE, La. — Blinn College softball (21-12, 6-0) earned a sweep against Baton Rouge Community College Sunday afternoon.

First, the Buccaneers downed Baton Rouge, 12-0, in five innings to open the doubleheader. Then, Blinn defeated the Bears, 11-4.

Meghan Morris threw a no-hitter to help the Buccaneers defeat Baton Rouge 12-0 in five innings to open the doubleheader.

Morris earned the win by only walking one and striking out five.

Amber Langston, Maria Garcia and Bailey Zibelin led Blinn's offense by driving in two runs each.

Blinn scored three runs in the first inning and added seven runs in the second inning for an early 10-0 lead.

Anna Pisaro and Kimber Cortemelia each hit a one-run single to drive in Blinn's first runs. Garcia scored Blinn's final run of the first inning off of Zibelin's double.

In the second inning, Langston and Garcia drove in two runs apiece with singles, Zibelin and Sarah Cedillo each hit one-run singles and Garcia scored on an error.

After hitting a double, Courtney Ogle scored on Alvarez-Lopez's single for Blinn to pull ahead 11-0 in the fourth inning.

Kelsey Lowke scored Blinn's final run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ogle in the fifth inning to run-rule Baton Rouge.

Blinn 11 – Baton Rouge 4

Pisaro and Emelyn Coussou combined for four RBIs to propel Blinn to an 11-4 victory over Baton Rouge for the sweep.

Mayela Fernandez also contributed to Blinn's offense by scoring three runs, while Lexi Harris and Cortemelia each scored two.

Alysa Torres sealed the win in the circle after throwing seven innings and giving up four runs on seven hits, while striking out four.

Langston put Blinn on the board first by scoring on a sacrifice fly in the opening inning for the Buccaneers to lead 1-0.

In the second inning, Blinn extended its lead to 3-0 when Fernandez stole home and Harris scored off of Coussou's double.

In the third inning, Blinn went ahead 5-0 after Cortemelia scored on an error and Fernandez scored on a single by Harris.

Baton Rouge scored its first run in the fourth inning, but Blinn answered back with two runs in the fifth inning to stay ahead 7-1. Cortemelia scored off a double hit by Cedillo, while Garcia scored on an error for Blinn's runs in the inning.

Baton Rouge scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and one run in the sixth inning to trail Blinn, 7-4.

However, the Buccaneers scored the final four runs of the game in the seventh inning. Fernandez and Cedillo each scored on a sacrifice fly, while Pisaro followed with a two-run homer.

Next, Blinn will resume conference play on the road against Alvin Community College on Friday, March 29, in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
