Carney’s no-hitter highlights Buccaneer sweep

BRENHAM, Texas – Sophomore pitcher Caitie Carney threw a no-hitter in the Blinn College softball team's final home game of the season as the Buccaneers swept Lamar State – Port Arthur in an afternoon double-header.

Blinn won the first game 3-0 before taking the second game 9-0 in five innings Sunday at Hohlt Park.

All the Buccaneers' runs in the opening game came in the fourth inning. Sydney Wellmann got things started by drawing a walk and Kristina Davila beat out a bunt. After Peyton Webb bunted the runners over, Shelbe Sterling followed with another successful bunt that scored Wellmann. Taylor Guidry hit a two-run single to make it 3-0.

Freshman Shannon O'Connor (15-10) threw a complete-game shutout, scattering five hits while striking out two. She did not walk a batter.

O'Connor's performance was only topped by that of Carney, who improved to 10-6 on the season with eight strikeouts in five innings.

Tiffani McKnight went 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, while Wellmann hit an RBI double and laid down a pair of sacrifice bunts. Kristina Davila went 3-for-3 with a two-run double and a solo home run, and Marissa Purcell and Webb each hit RBI singles.

The Buccaneers (29-18, 15-7 in Region XIV) close the regular season Tuesday with a 1 p.m. double-header against Angelina College in Lufkin.
