Buccaneers take two from Coastal Bend

BEEVILLE, Texas – The Blinn Buccaneer softball team swept both games of an afternoon double-header at Coastal Bend College today, topping the Cougars 15-4 and 11-3.

The Buccaneers piled up 16 hits in the opener as Kristina Davila led the way, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Peyton Webb was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, and Christa Hartnett and Shelbe Sterling each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Tiffani McKnight, Taylor Guidry, Caitie Carney and Marissa Purcell each drove in a run.

Freshman Shannon O'Connor (14-10) earned the win. She scattered nine hits and two walks over six innings, striking out eight. The game ended via mercy rule after six innings.

In Game 2, the Buccaneers rallied for five runs in the third inning, then capped the victory with a pair of two-run homers.

Davila got the Buccaneers on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the first inning. In the third, Sydney Wellmann and Purcell each hit RBI singles and Carney added a sac fly before McKnight launched a two-run homer.

Wellmann added another RBI single in the fourth, and in the sixth Davila and Carney each hit two-run homers. The game ended via mercy rule after six innings.

Blinn, which has now won six of its last seven, improved to 27-18 on the season and 13-7 in the Region XIV Conference.

The Buccaneers host Lamar State – Port Arthur for their final home games of the season Sunday. That double-header begins at 1 p.m. at Hohlt Park.
