Davila’s seventh-inning blast salvages double-header split

GALVESTON, Texas – Kristina Davila launched a two-run home run and finished with three RBIs to lead the Blinn College softball team to a double-header split with the Galveston Whitecaps here Wednesday night.

Galveston won the opening game 2-1 before Davila's seventh-inning blast lifted the Buccaneers to a 6-5 victory.

A pitcher's duel between Blinn's Shannon O'Connor and Galveston's Kaci Freeze highlighted the first game. O'Connor (13-10) scattered five hits – including a solo home run – and two walks.

The game remained scoreless until Galveston scored one in the sixth. Blinn first baseman Sydney Wellmann tied the score with an RBI single in the top of the seventh, but the Whitecaps would score in the bottom of the inning to claim the win.

The Buccaneers finished with five hits in the contest.

Blinn's bats heated up in the second game. Wellmann hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to erase Galveston's early 2-0 lead, and in the fifth the Bucs added two more runs as Davila hit an RBI single and third baseman Peyton Webb hit a sacrifice fly.

Galveston took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth, but Davila's two-run home run proved to be the game winter.

Sophomore Caitie Carney (8-6) scattered six hits and three walks in the win.

Blinn improved to 25-18 on the season and 11-7 in the Region XIV Conference. The team travels to Beeville Saturday for a 1 p.m. double-header at Coastal Bend College, then hosts its final home games of the season Sunday when Lamar State – Port Arthur comes to town for a 1 p.m. twin bill.
