Freshman pitcher ties Blinn's single-season strikeout mark with 16

Pitcher Shannon O'Connor tied the Blinn College softball team's single-game strikeouts record and outfielder Tiffani McKnight drove in six runs as the Buccaneers swept Coastal Bend College in an afternoon double-header at Hohlt Park.

Blinn defeated Coastal Bend 3-2, then 16-3 in five innings.

O'Connor was dominant in the opener, striking out 16 batters to tie Alis Shafer's 2007 record.

Kristina Davila, making her first start of the season at shortstop, and McKnight each went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Outfielder Taylor Guidry drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

A pair of seven-run rallies propelled the Buccaneers in Game 2. The Buccaneers struck for seven runs in the first and fourth innings as sophomore pitcher Caitie Carney upped her record to 5-6 on the season.

McKnight went 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs and center fielder Christa Hartnett was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Guidry went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and RBI and first baseman Sydney Wellmann was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.

Third baseman Peyton Webb went 2-for-4 with a double and catcher Shelbe Sterling hit a two-run home run.

The wins improved the Buccaneers to 21-16 on the season and 7-5 in the Region XIV Conference. The Buccaneers have now won five of their last six and will look to carry that momentum into Saturday's action, when they host Galveston College for a 1 p.m. double-header at Hohlt Park.
