Gibbons named Blinn’s 2019 Leroy Dreyer MVP Diamond award winner

Blinn College shortstop Cameron Gibbons (Houston) has been named the 2019 Leroy Dreyer MVP Diamond Award winner.

The award was named after former Blinn baseball coach and athletic director Leroy Dreyer, an NJCAA Baseball and American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Famer who worked at the College for 36 years and still regularly attends Buccaneer athletic events.  Cullen Jozwiak (Brenham) won the award in 2015, Blaine Suehs (Caldwell) won in 2016, Sam McElreath (Brenham) and Jay Anderson (Humble) won in 2017, and Kyle Gray (Austin) and Brandon Ashy (Cypress) won in 2018.

"It is an honor to be chosen for this award. It means a lot that I had so many great teammates who helped me get to where I am," Gibbons said. "I came into the season with a good mindset and wanted to do things right both on and off the field."

Gibbons was named all-conference this season after leading the Buccaneers and ranking sixth in the Region XIV South Zone Division in batting average (.343). He also led Blinn with 70 hits, while driving in 29 runs.

In two seasons as a starter for the Buccaneers, he batted .340 in 95 games while accumulating 116 hits. Following his freshman year, he earned all-region honors and was selected as a Texas-New Mexico Junior College Baseball Coaches Association All-Star.

"Cameron was consistent for us every day on the field and with his work ethic and attitude," said Harvey McIntyre, Blinn head coach. "During his career at Blinn, he helped us win 70 games while maintaining a high grade-point average in the classroom. I am very proud of who he is as a person and what kind of player he was for us."

Gibbons is committed to Texas State University to continue his academic and playing career.

Blinn compiled a 33-22 overall record with a 20-15 conference mark in 2019. The Buccaneers placed second in the Region XIV Tournament.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
