GALVESTON, Texas — Sophomore pitcher Jackson Leath helped lead Blinn College baseball (9-6, 3-3) to a 3-1 victory over Galveston College to open Saturday's doubleheader on the road.

The Buccaneers lost to Galveston in the second game of the doubleheader, 2-1.  The game concluded shortly after the fifth inning due to weather conditions.

Blinn 3 – Galveston 1

Leath pitched a complete game for the Buccaneers to come out on top of a pitching duel against Galveston, 3-1.

Leath sealed the win after surrendering only one run on four hits, while striking out five.

"It is great to have Leath pitch for us in the first game every Saturday," said Harvey McIntyre, Blinn head coach. "He was outstanding today and got us in the fight for a chance to win the series."

On offense, Alec Sanchez and Blake Faecher each drove in one run. Westley Schields went 2-for-3 to score one run, while Reggie McCalister scored two runs.

Blinn got on the board early, scoring one run in the first inning. McCalister recorded the first hit of the game with a double, advanced to third on an error and scored on a single off the bat of Cameron Gibbons.

The Buccaneers extended their lead to 3-0 in the third inning after Schields scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Faecher and McCalister stole home.

Galveston scored its lone run in the third inning.

Galveston 2 – Blinn 1

Despite a strong defense, Blinn didn't get the run support it needed in a 2-1 loss to Galveston in five innings.

John Chomko pitched the first 2 1/3 innings, surrendering two runs on six hits. Ryan Day pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, not allowing a hit, while striking out five.

Jake Miller went 2-for-2, while Faecher went 1-for-1 and scored Blinn's only run.

After Galveston took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Blinn evened the score in the second inning. Faecher landed on base with a double, moved to third on a single by Miller and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Russell.

Galveston scored the final run of the game in the third inning, which was enough for the win.

Next, Blinn will host No. 3 McLennan Community College in a non-conference game on Monday, March 4, at 4 p.m. at Leroy Dreyer Field.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
