Buccaneers sweep Coastal Bend in final home games, 6-5 and 7-2

BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College baseball swept Coastal Bend College by the scores of 6-5 and 7-2 in the final home games of the season at Leroy Dreyer Field on Monday.

With the pair of wins, the Buccaneers improve to 34-15 overall and stay at 23-8 in Region XIV play.

Blinn 6 – Coastal Bend 5

Alec Sanchez knocked in three runs in order to help the Buccaneers defeat Coastal Bend 6-5 to open the doubleheader.

Gray Rodgers chipped in with a home run for two RBIs, while Drew Ardoin and Brandon Ashy each scored two runs to lead the offense.

Cody Collins was the winning pitcher after throwing two scoreless innings and not allowing a hit, while striking out three.

Blinn was down 5-4 in the fifth inning until Ashy scored the final two runs of the game for the Buccaneers to come out on top. Ashy scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning after Koby Collins walked the bases loaded to even the score. In the sixth inning, Ashy reached base due to an error and Sanchez drove him in with a single for Blinn to take a 6-5 lead for good.

Blinn scored the first two runs of the game in the first inning after Reggie McCalister and Ardoin scored on an error.

Coastal Bend evened the score with two runs in the second inning and added two more in the third inning to extend its lead to 4-2.

Gray Rodgers answered back with a two-run shot over the fence in the bottom of the third inning to level the score 4-4.

Coastal Bend scored its final run of the game in the fifth inning for a 5-4 lead until the Buccaneers stormed back for the win.

Blinn 7 – Coastal Bend 2

Blinn kept the momentum rolling into the final game of the doubleheader for a 7-2 victory.

Sanchez, McCalister and Cameron Gibbons each drove in two runs, while Collins knocked in one to lead the offense.

Jackson Leath recorded the win after tossing five innings and only surrendering one run on four hits, while striking out six.

Coastal Bend held a 1-0 lead for a short time after scoring in the second inning, however McCalister hit a solo home run in the third inning for Blinn to tie the game.

Sanchez kept the offense rolling with a two-run homer in the fourth inning for Rodgers to also score and the Buccaneers to take a 3-1 lead.

Blinn's best inning was in the fifth when the Buccaneers scored three runs for a 6-1 advantage. Gibbons drove in two runs with a single for Ashy and Ardoin to score, while Collins followed with a double for Sanchez to score.

Coastal Bend and Blinn each scored one run in the sixth inning for the final runs of the game. McCalister drove in the Buccaneers last run with a single for Hunter Trinidad, who led the inning off with a double, to score.

The Buccaneers will resume conference play on the road against Laredo Community College on Friday, May 4, for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
