Blinn unblemished in conference after defeating Galveston, 8-5

GALVESTON, Texas - After falling behind in the first two innings, the Blinn College Buccaneers manufactured eight hits and took advantage of four Galveston College errors to defeat the Whitecaps, 8-5, on Thursday night.

With the win the Buccaneers improve to 8-5 overall and remain perfect in conference with a 4-0 record.

Jacob Miller went 2-for-4 and recorded three RBIs, while scoring one run to lead the Buccaneers at the plate. Brandon Ashy drove in two runs, while Hunter Trinidad drove in one. Most of Blinn's line-up got into the action as Ashy, Trinidad, Marshall Skinner, Gray Rodgers, Koby Collins, Reggie McCalister and Craig Mattes each scored one run in the game.

Andrew Morgan picked up his second win of the season after pitching five innings of middle relief to keep the Whitecaps scoreless. He surrendered four hits, while striking out three and walking one.

Galveston scored one run in the first inning and added three more in the second inning as the Buccaneers fell behind early, 4-0.

Blinn took advantage of three errors of Galveston's errors in the third inning to get on the board with three runs. Collins sparked Blinn's offense in the third inning after leading off with a single and moving to third base on an error. Trinidad followed with a one-run double for Blinn's first run. Two more errors in the inning allowed Ashy and Trinidad to score as Blinn gained on the Whitecaps, 4-3.

The Buccaneers earned all four runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead and keep it for good. Skinner and Mattes drew walks and Rodgers singled to load the bases. Miller followed with a double that allowed two runs to score, then Ashy unloaded the bases with a sacrifice fly that drove in two more.

Both teams remained scoreless in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but the Buccaneers struck again in the eighth inning with one run. With two outs, McAlister heated Blinn's offense back up with a single and advanced to scoring position on an error. Miller followed with a RBI single for Blinn to lead 8-4.

The Whitecaps added their final run to the board in the bottom of the ninth inning, but fell to the Buccaneers, 8-5.

The Buccaneers will return to Leroy Dreyer Field on Saturday, March 3 to finish the three-game conference series against Galveston College in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 36 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
