Shutout from Gray helps Blinn defeat Wharton, 2-0

BRENHAM, Texas - A two-run, third-inning home run off the bat of Reggie McCalister coupled with a seven-inning shutout from pitcher Kyle Gray paved the way for Blinn College baseball to defeat Wharton County Junior College 2-0 to open Sunday's doubleheader at Leroy Dreyer Field.

Laredo picked up a 7-0 victory to conclude the doubleheader and split the pair. With the split, the Buccaneers move to 20-12 overall and 12-6 in Region XIV play.

Blinn 2 - Wharton 0

Behind a solid pitching performance by Gray and two RBIs by McCalister, Blinn was able to beat Wharton 2-0 to open the doubleheader.

Gray improved to 4-1 on the mound after throwing seven scoreless innings and only surrendering two hits, while striking out 10.

McCalister managed Blinn's only hit in the game, but made it count with a two-run homer in the third inning for the only runs in the game. Sammy Blair also scored after leading off the inning with a walk.

Wharton 7 - Blinn 0

Wharton bounced back with a 7-0 victory over Blinn to close out the doubleheader.

Wharton limited the Buccaneers to just two hits over nine innings. Jake Miller hit a single in the bottom of the third inning and Drew Ardoin led off the seventh inning with a single.

Wharton grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening inning to set the pace and extended its lead to 4-0 by the fourth inning.

The Pioneers added a run in the sixth inning and scored its final two runs in the eighth inning for a 7-0 final.

Blinn will finish the series at Wharton on Monday, April 9 at 4 p.m. The Buccaneers and Pioneers will resume Friday's game that was postponed in the bottom of the second inning with both teams tied at 4-4.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 36 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
