NJCAA names Blinn QB Hubenak offensive player of the week

Blinn College quarterback Jake Hubenak has been named the NJCAA offensive player of the week after throwing for 601 yards and 10 touchdowns in the Buccaneers' 80-0 victory over Arkansas Baptist College Saturday.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound redshirt freshman from Georgetown, Texas completed 35 of 45 passes on the afternoon, and connected with 13 different receivers, led by sophomore Dede Westbrook, who caught 10 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns.

Hubenak's 1,926 passing yards and 26 touchdowns each lead the nation. The Buccaneers rank No. 1 in the nation with 534.5 passing yards per game this season, and rank second in total offense at 641.0 yards per game.

On Tuesday, the NJCAA announced that the Buccaneers had cracked the top 20 poll for the first time this season, reaching No. 18. The 3-1 Buccaneers have outscored their opponents 199-9 in their three wins this season. Their lone loss came to ninth-ranked Tyler Junior College.

The NJCAA also named Scottsdale linebacker Ryan Henderson defensive player of the week and Butler's Van Powell special teams player of the week.

The Buccaneers have a bye this week, but return to action Oct. 4 when they play at Cisco College at 3 p.m.
