Buccaneers open season Aug. 30 at Southeast Prep

The Keith Thomas era at Blinn College will officially begin Aug. 30 when the Buccaneer football team takes on Southeast Prep to open its 2014 campaign.

The Bucs will play an eight-game schedule with a scrimmage at Texas Lutheran University on Aug. 23.

"I wish we could add another game to have nine games, even 10," Thomas said, who was named head coach in December. "We've called everybody in America and they all have games scheduled."

Thomas will need to have the Bucs prepared quickly, as the Bucs face Tyler Junior College Sept. 6 in their Southwest Junior College Football Conference opener at Cub Stadium.

Four of Blinn's seven conference games will be played at home at Cub Stadium, but three of those games will be against traditional conference powers Tyler, Trinity Valley and Navarro.

"That's a big advantage," Thomas said.

The Buccaneers will celebrate Homecoming Oct. 25 when they host Navarro for their regular-season finale.

For the second straight year, Blinn will make the 14-hour trek to Miami, Okla., to face Northeastern Oklahoma A&M on Sept. 13. The Bucs will also make a six-hour journey to Cisco on Oct. 4 following their bye week.

Thomas said he's still looking to add a game during the bye week or to replace the scrimmage. He's also looking to plug in the final holes in the roster heading into the summer.

"We're in talks with a few Division I guys who could possibly transfer here," Thomas said. "We signed a good lineman and center last week."
