Buccaneers struggle with timely hitting as Galveston takes two

GALVESTON, Texas – The Blinn baseball team had no issues getting on base here Saturday afternoon, but timely hits escaped the offense as the Galveston Whitecaps swept the doubleheader, 4-2 and 6-4.

The Buccaneers outhit the Whitecaps in both games, 12-8 and 10-5, but five errors in Game 2 cost them a series split.

The teams split Thursday's doubleheader at Leroy Dreyer Field, with Blinn taking a 2-1 victory in eight innings in Game 1 before Galveston took Game 2, 11-5.

The Bucs took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2 after a Whitecap error allowed Jose Reyes and Nolan Brown to score. In the next at-bat, Stephen Stuart singled to score Caden Williams.

Stuart was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Williams and Hunter Lehman had two hits.

After a pair of one-run innings, Galveston took the lead for good with a three-run fifth.

A Reyes' double in the fifth inning of Game 1 scored Stuart and Reed Robinson to cut Galveston's lead to 4-2 but starting pitcher Jose Rendon and the Whitecap bullpen shut the Bucs down the final two innings.

Blinn now readies itself for the Region XIV Conference Tournament May 10-14 at the Roadrunner Complex in Lufkin.
