Buccaneers drop series opener to Weatherford

WEATHERFORD, Texas – Blinn baseball coach Harvey McIntyre felt his Buccaneers left a lot on the field here Friday night.

But he's ready to see how the Bucs respond in Saturday's doubleheader against Weatherford College. Blinn fell in the opening game of a three-game series to Weatherford, 4-1.

"We faced a good arm, but we didn't do a good job of competing tonight," McIntyre said. "We gave them a couple easy innings and that gave them some confidence."

The Bucs (5-3) didn't pick up their first hit until the top of the sixth inning on a Nolan Brown single. By that point, Weatherford held a 2-0 advantage.

Weatherford made it a 4-0 game in the eighth before Blinn found the scoreboard in the top of the ninth.

That came off leadoff hitter Jager Toffan's two-out single that scored Cullen Gassaway.

Toffan was 1-for-5 with an RBI and Gassaway was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.

"We've got to get back to who we are on Saturday," McIntyre said. "This is the first time we've lost Game 1 of a series. We'll see how the guys respond tomorrow. I think they will."

The Bucs close out the series tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Sophomore ace Robbie Dickey left the game after throwing two innings Friday. He allowed no runs, walked three and struck out one. McIntyre said Dickey was battling some arm fatigue and planned to let him throw no more than four innings tonight.

Freshman Christian Thames threw 2 1-3 innings of relief and allowed a hit and two unearned runs. Sophomore Keith Brenner allowed two runs—one unearned—on four hits in 3 2-3 innings of work.

"Those guys came out of the bullpen and really gave it their all tonight," McIntyre said. "They were one of the bright spots, no doubt."
