Crystal Young wasn't focused on breaking any records during her time with the Blinn College volleyball team.
Instead, the sophomore from Friendswood, Texas, focused all her attention on helping the top-ranked Buccaneers win a national championship.
While she's helped the Bucs reach the Final Four of the NJCAA Division I Volleyball National Championship, Young broke the Bucs' single-season assist record in the Bucs' tournament opener against Gadsden State Thursday.
"When we received our media guides, I was flipping through looking at the records and I saw there was a girl that led with 1,410 assists," Young said. "At that point, we had already earned our bid to nationals."
Young broke Megan Loftin's record of 1,410 set in 2006 when she set up Trinity Alualu for a kill that gave Blinn an 8-4 lead in the third set. It was a match that the Bucs went on to sweep.
It seemed as merely a formality that Young was going to break the record heading into the national tournament. She's averaging 11 assists per set and entered the tournament 1,397 assists on the season. Heading into tonight's 7:30 CST match against Hillborgough Community College, Young has 1,467 assists.
"I couldn't have done this without my hitters," Young said. "It's a team effort no matter what."
