Buccaneers remain undefeated with two Applebee’s Classic wins

The 13th-ranked Blinn College volleyball team extended its season-opening win streak to six matches Friday with two more victories at the Applebee's Classic in the Blinn P.E. Building.

The Buccaneers defeated Hill 25-11, 25-23, 25-22, then topped Navarro 25-23, 25-20, 25-18. The Buccaneers have yet to lose a single set this season.

Sophomore middle blocker Bruna Evangelista paced a balanced Buccaneer offense with seven kills and freshman outside hitter Jaeda Allen added six. Sophomore setter Crystal Young dished out 24 assists and also led Blinn with three aces.

"I thought Crystal distributed the ball really well," Blinn (6-0) coach Erin Mellinger said. "We weren't passing well enough against Hill to run our middles very much, but did a great job of working the ball to our outsides."

Laycia Robinson led Hill with 12 kills.

Evangelista, a returning All-American, posted a match-high 15 kills against Navarro, and freshman outside hitter Rebecca Reeve had the Buccaneers' best all-around performance of the day with seven kills, four aces and four blocks.

"That's the thing about Rebecca – she's so consistent," Mellinger said. "She's one of our only players playing six rotations and she's consistently doing a very good job."

Young distributed 22 assists, Castanon-Hill matched Reeve for the team lead with four blocks and freshman Alyssa LaMont paced the defense with six digs.

The Buccaneers conclude tournament play with two matches Saturday – vs. Temple at 1 p.m. and vs. Panola at 5 p.m.
